I’ve written about this before but I came across a great post by the Bryant Park Project on National Public Radio that I couldn’t resist.
According to the video, if the average American family’s monthly home water bills reflected bottled water prices, they’d be paying over $100,000 a year. The U.S. bottled water market will total close to $16 billion in 2007. This, when many parts of the world are struggling with unpotable water.
I love the unscientific survey comparing Bling H20, a popular spring water that costs about $55 a bottle and Manhattan tap water. No one preferred the Bling H20. In fact, most folks thought the Bling H20 was Manhattan tap. The difference is that the water is served in a crystal encrusted bottle, so people who are self-important can be just a little more so. Perhaps Charles Fishman of FastCompany.com says it best:
“…in a world in which 1 billion people have no reliable source of drinking water, and 3,000 children a day die from diseases caught from tainted water, that conspicuous consumption of bottled water that we don’t need seems wasteful, and perhaps cavalier.”
