I have started browsing the organic section of my grocery store. Albeit small, I was able to pick up organic potatoes and carrots for dinner. Having grown up on a potato farm, I am very aware of the amount of pesticides used in raising potatoes. My family battled the striped wing potato beetle with traditional pesticides for years, as did all the neighboring farmers. As a result, the water table and well water is now poisoned and can’t be used. I even remember being caught in a cloud of pesticide during one aerial application. I shudder to think…
I probably won’t go 100% organic but I want the changes I do make to have an impact, not just be an opportunity for me to spend more money at the store. Dr Alan Greene, author of “Raising Baby Green“, has created an Organic Rx on his website, a guide to making organic choices that can drive significant change beyond the immediate nutritional value or reduced exposure to pesticides. The list is in recommended order based on the impact of the change and how easy it is to make. Dr. Greene’s video presentations:
- Milk
- Potatoes
- Peanut Butter
- Organic Baby Food
- Catsup
- Cotton
- Apples
- Beef
- Soy
- Corn
- Bonus: Organic Wine
