If you’re in the market for a new 2008 vehicle be sure to consult the 2008 Fuel Economy Guide. The guide was produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to help consumers make well-informed choices when purchasing new vehicles.
Fuel economy estimates, which appear on the window stickers of all new cars and light trucks prior to sale, are determined by tests that manufacturers and EPA conduct according to EPA specifications. This year’s values are based on new test methods EPA finalized in December 2006. The new methods are designed to better account for actual driving conditions that can lower fuel economy, such as higher speed driving, use of air conditioning and cold weather operation. Because of the new methods, fuel economy estimates for all vehicles will generally be lower than those of last year. The EPA has revised the 1985-2007 MPG estimates to make them comparable to EPA’s new 2008 MPG ratings.
2008 Model Year Overall Fuel Economy Leaders
If you’re concerned about fuel economy, look to hybrid vehicles. They continue to lead the government’s fuel economy ratings. The Toyota Prius tops the list at 48 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. More hybrid models are available than ever giving consumers greater choices when shopping for fuel efficient vehicles. Use the http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ to search for specific makes and models.

2008 Model Year Lowest Overall Fuel Economy Models
I was a little surprised that Hummer vehicles (I detest the whole armored tank look!) didn’t make the bottom 10 lowest fuel economy models. On the other hand, it shouldn’t be surprising that the most expensive models flaunt the lowest mileage. If you buy one of these cars, you’re not worried about how much it costs to fill the gas tank nor an image that says “green”.
