Hypermiling – More Miles from a Gallon of Gas June 4, 2008

With oil prices hitting record highs due to sustained demand and no relief in sight, we can all use some tips on how to extract more miles out of a gallon of gas.

Ecomodder’s recent post 105 hypermiling / ecodriving tips has lots of tips that you and I can use. According to the article’s intro, ”Adjusting the nut behind the wheel is arguably the most important modification a person can make to his or her vehicle.” Based on what I see on the road, the nuts are everywhere. A peculiar habit that seems to be prevalent in southern Arizona, however, is that drivers do not use turn signals. You wouldn’t want to tell the driver behind you your intentions. Ever. What’s up with that?

You can get additional information about hypermiling techniques and hybrid cars from the forums at CleanMPG.com and GreenHybrid.com.

On a related note, I am not sad about the possibility of GM selling its Hummer brand as reported by Reuters. That is the one car I simply detest on principle. Selling Hummer now will be like putting your house on the market in the worst housing market in the U.S. Doesn’t GM have any business analysts who could foresee the trends? Sheesh.

oh, you too you have nutters with wheels ?

Here, people also forget to use turn signals but also accelerate to overtake me, then brake heavily to take the curb a hundred meters later.

ie : they consume a lot of energy to win a mere couple of seconds, just because, I have to drive slower because I just had my driving license ( yeah, got it at 23… didn’t need a car beforehand)

Otherwise, the daily green also provided tips to get more miles from your gallon :)

Edouard, People drive the same everywhere I guess. Actually glad to hear you got your license at an older age. My son got his license when he was 19 and is a cautious driver. My daughter got her permit at 16. Now 22, she’s on her third car. Most people wouldn’t agree but I don’t think teenagers need to drive to school. I know I didn’t even though I wanted to and begged my Dad to drive his Camaro. I also think drivers ought to be retested regularly.

You’re right, The Daily Green has more tips under Transportation – http://www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/tips/?cat=2.

Daryl, we are on a mind meld … this is on my list to post about, but I’m waiting to see how my next tank of gas comes out as I’m trying some of the techniques more carefully (and have finally persuaded my husband to do so too). I’ll reference your links when I do!

cheaplikeme, Thank you, I would love to hear how the techniques work for you. I wish I could persuade my husband to use these techniques. He drives most of the time and starts / stops as quickly as possible although he does use cruise control and doesn’t speed. Competitive personalities are great for work, not so great on the road. ~ Daryl

Adjusting the nut behind the wheel is probably the hardest one to do. I’m working on adjusting this nut, I have a scanguage (http://scangauge.com/) to show me what my current MPGs are so when I start going too fast I can seem them dip. This gadget has really slowed me down and saved me money at the pump. I don’t work for them I swear, it’s just a great tool. :)

James, There’s nothing like instant feedback to modify your behavior. Scangauge looks like an excellent tool. Glad to hear it’s saving you money! ~ Daryl
