DIY Foaming Hand Soap December 16, 2008

foam_soapOkay, this is one of those times when I could smack my head and say “Doh!” I saw this Foaming Hand Soap Savings tip on Tip Hero.

My spouse loves Method foaming hand soap. I love Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap. Method doesn’t sell foaming hand soap refills for their dispensers and I don’t want to buy a new dispenser every time one runs out. Plus, while I love Dr. Bronner’s soap, the dispenser I was using would clog just enough to squirt the soap onto my clothes instead of my hands. Usually when I was ready to walk out the door.

I poured an inch of Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap in the bottom of an empty Method foaming hand soap container, filled the rest with water and shook it gently to mix it. A couple of pumps later and it foamed up nicely.

This would work with just about any clear liquid soap including dish detergent. Avoid creamy liquid soaps since they do not foam up. Do not fill the dispenser above the foaming mechanism as this will also cause clogging.

I am going to try this! Target carries refills of the Method foaming soap now. They come in a low waste bag rather than a plastic container like other soaps.

I just found this, and am totally going to try this!

I’ll tell you, it really makes my bottle of castile soap last a very long time! ~ Daryl

Well, there are more great minds in the world! I was refilling another pump container w/Dr Bronner’s, one without a wide base, and it tipped over all the time. I found the Method pump at Superstore, and have been using it for several months now. I was just online to find a more stylish, permanent pump for my kitchen, but I can’t find anything but the tippy ones (or ones with bad reviews), so I guess I’ll get another Method. With 4 kids at home all day, it gets a lot of use, but the Dr Bronner’s lasts a long time this way, and I know my kids are getting a quality, gentle soap.

ann, I’m a klutz when it comes to refilling bottles so the Method dispenser is perfect for me. Plus it’s lots harder to tip over. I have one in each bathroom plus the kitchen. Of course, now I refill them with diluted Dr. Bronner’s! ~ Daryl

A half inch of soap is plenty. I diluted the soap 4:1 with 1/4 cup ( of soap and 1 cup of water. I got similar results to the Method in a side by side comparison.

My first test of 3:1 with 1/3 cup soap (which is less than an inch) and 1 cup of water seemed to like it had too much soap.

Thanks Jeff. Since I wrote the initial post, I find that I am using less soap than I used to. It doesn’t pay to add soap when you don’t need to!
